Nilumir and what happened there (Epilogue)

Three cloaked figures followed by a great black panther approached the elven city. The one cloaked in light teal turns and raises his hood, revealing his moon elf heritage. He smiles to the other two. The woman in dark purple raises her hood, her golden hair shines in the light and black cloak keeps his up, but keeps close to her. They have been traveling for at least three months. They had traveled by Khurnak Vortex as far as they could, but the moon elves had rebuilt their capital far from their gate after the drow wars, and for good reason… Nilumir was a city that met the standards of its name… moon jewel.

Suddenly the panther growls… a portal opens in front of the open gate, bugbears and hobgoblins spill out. The moon elf and drow are quick to their weapons, but the planeswalker feels a pull… there’s another portal… this is a distraction. She pulls the wind around herself to cloak her movements and hastens herself, the panther running after, past the hordes and into the city. Her heart beats quickly… where is it… she notices the influx of power coming from the palace. She runs faster, she doesn’t notice the shadow following her. Into the palace… the guards are too busy with bugbears that had made their way into the city. Through the palace… into the suite where the power was coming from, she freezes. These were her mother’s chambers, and attached was the vault holding Calavel’s Moon Blade. She reaches for her seemingly empty staff sling and as she touches it the glowing staff materializes.

Orlandu! Get Calavel and Protheus!

The panther is hesitant for a moment and then runs off and the elf twirls the staff then enters the chamber housing the Moon Blade. She recognizes the fiend, a slime ball of a portal jumping wizard she had come in contact with before.

You!

The disgusting rat-like little man grinned at her and waved as he partially unwraps the cloth he had the Moon Blade in and stepped backward into the portal. The elf charges forward to try to make the portal but instead, dagger meets the flesh of her pregnancy-rounded belly. She inhales sharply and the pain blinds her, the blade was enchanted and poisoned… she falls to the ground.

In and out of consciousness.

The pain is so intense… the beautiful child within her that she had been speaking to in her meditation was growing weaker… so was her voice.

Beautiful Chaos … No…. don’t leave me…

In her mind’s eye the planeswalker reached out to the beautiful dark skinned child with golden hair and sapphire eyes.

I can’t stay maman…

The child reached out to her mother and then smiles.

Don’t worry maman… I will return…and I will bring my brother with me.

Aysel’s tears stopped.

Brother?

The child only smiles and touches her mother, the planeswalker is lightened… the child took the curse… or at least part of the taint away even though she hadn’t given it.

I love you maman…

There is bright light…

And then… darkness.

Darkness and voices.

Oh gods!

Darthiir? Darthiir!? Aysel… No Love…stay with me…

Someone get a healer in here now!

She couldn’t move… couldn’t speak… she felt Orlandu lick her… Protheus hold her in his arms urging her to stay with him.

Below her the net that the Celestial had made when he threw himself in hell instead of letting her go when she faced the half demons was starting to fail. She could feel the pull of the Field of Heroes… Her father’s voice…

Her mother’s voice…

No child… not yet… you still have much to do.

A tingling… the field is farther… the barrier reinforced.

The voices aren’t so distant… but they are hushed… she can still hear them… in and out…

Is she?

She is on the edge… there is a thin thread left…

Our child?

I’m sorry…. She’s gone…

Immense sorrow through the bond of elf and drow…

Cleaning of wounds… healing salves… antidotes… blurry… Light and darkness… whispers of the field… voices.

Where did the dark elf go?

To do what he does best to cope…

He’s going after the assassin?

Yes… he recognized the signature…

Oh goddess…

Weaker… antidotes and anti-venoms failing… cold… darkness.

She’s fading fast…

There has to be a way!

Well… maybe there is…

What is it? Why are you looking at me like that?

There is a ritual…

But?

You will have to give her your divinity…

Why do you make that sound a bad thing… I could wield the moon blade then… couldn’t I?

Yes… but you could also die…

I almost died before, I will face it again… besides.. I have no life if she does not live to retrieve the blade…

Very well. I will contact the temple…

Voices… light… singing… Calavel near… laying… stripped… washed… clothed… Ceremony… warmth… sleep.

Memory…

The memory of coming into being… conversations with mother before birth… tied to the conversations with the child…

Memory… Father… learning archery… magic with Hawkwing… Lessons…

Wandering Mirlaiqua… the world… the temple… planewalking…

Flashes… happy times… friends across worlds… lives saved… light…

Celestian.

In his arms… pain fading… life… live… stroke my hair… stronger… stronger… no more sleep… wake… wake…

Awake.

The planeswalker opens her eyes and blinks.

I’m… alive?

As if on cue Serena enters the room.

Mother?

Yes child… its me.

Elation fills the woman… but then she remembers.

My little chaos… she’s gone…

Tears start flowing from her eyes and the older woman embraces her daughter for the first time in nearly two centuries.

Yes… she did… I’m sorry baby…

I couldn’t save her… couldn’t stop the portal jumper… assassin…

I know child…

Aysel shifts in the covers of the bed and looks at the woman for a long while.

How long?

Nearly seven months…

The planeswalker nods slightly and closes her eyes.

Calavel?

He made it through the ceremony fine… Selune has embraced him.

The planeswalker nods her head and smiles slightly.

Good.

The smile turns to a determined frown quickly enough and the planeswalker sits up easily enough.

Kamara… you should rest more…

I’ve rested seven months Serena… and I haven’t been Kamara in years.

The older woman nods.

What are you going to do?

Aysel looks at her mother for moments that seem to last for hours.

I’m going to get Calavel his moon blade back.

You know who stole it?

Yes. And I know who will know how to find him.

The older woman nods as the planeswalker rises from the bed and dresses in the traveling robes that the older woman motions to, and then her equipment.

Where does that take you then?

The planeswalker turns away from her mother and opens a portal in front of her.

Sigil.

She steps through.
